Rowan Yarns 60th Magazine Event with Kaffe Fassett - Monday 15th August 2016

We would like to invite you to join us for our very special celebrations as part of Rowan Yarns 60th Knitting & Crochet Magazine. On Monday, August 15th, we will be hosting a memorable and historic day with celebrated designer Kaffe Fassett here at the Gardens of the Rose.

The iconic Rowan fabric and knitwear designer, famed for his use of colour work and fabulous floral patterns, will be hosting a talk on his career, the inspiration behind it and the history of his association with Rowan. A fashion show of famous Kaffe designs from the past, a book signing and a wonderful cream tea will follow.

A Rowan retailer will be on hand offering Rowan yarns, fabrics and other products.

Why not join us and share your memories of the sixty editions and the journey they have taken us upon.

An Introduction to Patchwork and Quilting - Tuesday 16th August 2016

Tutor: Janet Goddard

A one day workshop for the beginner which will explore a number of techniques to get you hooked on patchwork! This workshop is also suitable for those who wish to update their skills. During the workshop we will cover rotary cutting, stitching accurate seams, piecing small and large shapes and quilting. Along the way there will be lots of tips and techniques. We will make a number of blocks which can be combined to make a small quilt top.

Time: 10am – 4pm

Skill level: Beginner

Materials needed: Students will need to bring a sewing machine, cutting mat, rotary cutter and ruler. A fabric list will be sent on booking.

Intarsia Design Workshop - Tuesday 16th August 2016

Tutor: Dee Hardwicke

We are celebrating Dee’s new book A Story in Yarn, how to design and knit an intarsia heirloom quilt with this special workshop. Come along and learn how to create beautiful intarsia motifs from plants and flowers that represent our changing seasons. You will be given the inspiration and techniques to create the first section of your very own intarsia quilt.

An Introduction to Crochet - Tuesday 16th August 2016

Tutor: Emma Osmond

Author of “The Crochet Workshop” Emma will teach you how to hold your hook, make a chain, double crochet and treble crochet. We will work on a simple project and then play with granny squares. By the end of the day you will be firmly grounded in the basics of crochet and will have the confidence to embark on simple patterns.

Stitch a large, modern patchwork “go anywhere” bag that will hold all those every day essentials. The softly padded bag features patchwork triangles and is finished with metal bag feet and leather handles. This bag comes from Janet’s book “Simply Modern Patchwork Bags”.

Learn to love making up! - Wednesday 17th August 2016

Tutor: Jem Weston

We put a lot of time and love in to knitting our garments. This workshop will teach you the shaping and sewing up skills needed to give your garment the professional finish it deserves.

On the day we will cover different shaping techniques whilst knitting a lovely little bird from The Knitted Nursery Collection. You will also learn how to sew up using mattress stitch.

English Country Garden Crochet Flower - Wednesday 17th August 2016

Tutor: Jane Crowfort

Inspired by the English Countryside, I have designed some lovely little flowers so that you can try a few effective crochet stitches and practice some great techniques.

You can choose yarn and bead shades to make your own variations of my flower designs, which you can then make into a corsage or small posy.

Techniques will include bullions stitches, colour changing and beading.

Participants need to have a basic knowledge of crochet techniques and will need to understand written pattern instructions.

Workshop fee includes yarn and beads. Please bring along a selection of crochet hooks between size 2.5mm & 4mm and a basic kit to include a sewing needle and a pair of scissors. You may also want to bring along a note pad and pen/pencil.

In this workshop we take a traditional block called Basement Windows and give it a modern geometric twist. The result is a fresh, modern quilt. The quilt is machine pieced.
